I don't usually like group projects. Once I found out that it was a requirement, 'annoyed' would be the last word to describe how I felt. Partners slack in projects. The content that the professors give groups isn't simple. And, for a lack of better wording, I suck at getting close to people if the time that I have a meeting with them is during non-class hours. But the time I spent on the Halloween and Green Market project helped me appreciate people and work ethics more.
It didn't help when I found out when we needed to set interviews and my partner didn't even communicate with me yet. But, you know, it could’ve worked the other way around. So never mind. But Jacob turned out to be a really cool guy, and he stayed focused after I contacted him. We both created questions for the people we were to interview, and we both asked people questions. What really worked out was Jacob's outgoing personality (I think Professor Lowe grouped us up on purpose). He somehow worked in 'normal' (day-to-day) conversations with the people we were interviewing before and after the interview. Working with Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service also served as gratifying. But I already expected that because I worked with them before. I was a little upset, though, when I found out that my partner and I basically needed another story before deadline. Thankfully one final event in the neighborhood we worked with (Martin Drive Neighborhood Association) came up before that deadline hit. I liked how we had an editor who made us feel as though we worked in an actual newsroom under a deadline. And it served as beneficial when the same editor came to our class and helped us with our articles that went with our multimedia pieces. The main thing I got from that day: close my eyes and visualize everything that I seen at the event I went to and use the images within my story. Working with a determined partner and a good online newspaper overall made me a better journalist. I don't think any of Jacob's outgoing personality rubbed off on me, but I learned some more questions that I could ask someone if I'm ever caught up with him or her in an awkward silence. And the news service taught me that getting something done in such a short period of time is not impossible.
